In my opinion, one of the most under appreciated parts of a song is the intro. It’s the first part of a song you hear; it’s what announces a favorite’s presence on an unfamiliar playlist, and it’s what sets the tone for the rest of the song. Three songs with some of my favorite intros are:
“Sex n’ Drugs” by Abhi the Nomad
The rest of this song isn’t my favorite, but I would listen to it on loop for hours just for that sweet, sweet intro. It’s the kind of intro that punches you in the face with pure ooey-gooey groove. I highly suggest listening to it with your volume all the way up.
“Let’s Go Crazy” by Prince
The intro to this song could only be described as cinematic which is fitting as it doesn’t just start the song, but also one of Prince’s most notable albums, Purple Rain, and it’s accompanying film. The song kicks off with a glamourous speech from Prince. Starting off the album this way sets a precedent that while the music itself is important throughout Purple Rain, so are the words.
“Where is My Mind?” by the Pixies
This song, popularized by its presence in cult classic Fight Club, starts with a borderline iconic distant oooo, which is cut-off by the lead singer telling it to “stop.” It perfectly accompanies the distant nature of the lyrics in the song, and I would argue that the intro alone is part of what makes this song as unique as it is.
