Coach James Blackburn has coached me to be the young man I am today. His influence extends well beyond athletics and into my values. He has taught me the importance of hard work, humility, and dedication. During my freshman and sophomore years when I had the privilege of getting to know Coach, we grew very close during our countless hours spent together on the track. Few bonds are stronger than that between a coach and an athlete, and he cultivated that bond with hundreds, if not thousands, of athletes during his career. I am honored to be a member of the brotherhood that he has created among his athletes, past and present. The brotherhood that lives on in Coach’s wake is a testament to his everlasting greatness and outstanding legacy.
I feel that I have a special responsibility in carrying on Coach Blackburn’s legacy in being a member of one of the last groups he coached. My teammates and I have done our best to pass on his legacy of hard work and winning to the underclassmen on the team. My memory of Coach’s dedication and hard work will propel me in all of my future endeavours, on and off the track. Thank you Coach Blackburn for your guidance and dedication, making all of us the best men we can be, on and off the track.
